Dear HEP members and Supporters,
Haiti has been hit by a 7.0 magnitude earthquake and over 40 aftershocks average 5.4. Port-au-Prince, the capital city, has been destroyed. along with the national palace and almost all of the governmental buildings, businesses and houses. The airport and seaport are badly damaged, and many cities in the western and southern part of the country are reduced to piles of rubble. Tens of thousands of lives have been lost. It is a disaster of apocalyptic proportion.
As we are grieving the lost lives of friends and family, we stand ready to participate in providing relief to the victims. The Haitian Education Project, in collaboration with Saint Leo University and other nonprofit organizations in the Tampa Bay area, has launched a relief operation to bring immediate aid to the people affected by the earthquake. We have already arranged with Kalos International to have the in-kind donations that we have received shipped to Port-au-Prince on Saturday, January 23rd.
In Port-au-Prince, people are sleeping in the streets and have no place to go. We want to act immediately to bring them shelters. To achieve this goal, we are working in collaboration with Shelter Box USA, a world renowned organization that specializes in providing shelter to victims of disasters. One of the shelter boxes that they ship and set up can provide 10 people with tents, sleeping supplies, tools, eating supplies, school supplies, and water purification tablets.
Gredeve is already providing emergency food and water supplies to Nazon residents. Our goal is to provide immediate monetary assistance and also send 30 boxes by the middle of February, to house up to 300 people. We ask for your support with our operation. Please help us help those who need us right now. Thank you in advance for your generosity.
